You Can’t Be India’s Friend Without Understanding Cricket”: Jaishankar

New Delhi, October 21, 2026

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar brought a touch of humour to an event hosted by the U.S. Mission in India to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, using cricket to highlight the cultural connections between India and the United States. His remarks also touched upon the longstanding relationship between the two countries and the people who have helped shape their ties.

Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar jokingly told the Secretary that understanding cricket was essential to being considered a friend of India. Referring to U.S.-associated cricketer Saurabh Netravalkar, he noted that the player hails from Mumbai.

Reflecting on the relationship between the two nations, Jaishankar said, “Friends, our ties have indeed come a long way.” His remarks highlighted how India-U.S. relations have evolved over time, with cultural connections and shared interests complementing diplomatic engagement.

Jaishankar also began referring to historical records of Americans who had travelled to or engaged with India, pointing to the long history of interaction between the two countries. His address formed part of the celebrations marking 250 years of America and brought attention to the historical and contemporary connections between India and the United States.
