Common Daily Habits That Could Be Harming Your Organs, Says Mumbai Surgeon

Oct 18, 2025, Mumbai

Even simple daily habits can silently affect your health over time, according to Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon and health educator Dr. Manan Vora. Many routines that feel harmless, like sitting for long hours, eating quickly, or rubbing your eyes, can gradually place strain on your organs and impact your long-term wellbeing. Dr. Vora recently shared an Instagram video explaining eight everyday habits that can quietly harm your body and offered tips to minimize their effects.

Breathing is the first step to good health. According to Dr. Vora, breathing through the mouth instead of the nose can dry out the airways and make you more prone to infections, affecting your lungs. Using proper breathing techniques and nasal breathing can reduce this risk and improve overall lung function.

Sitting for extended periods, common among office workers, puts extra pressure on the heart and reduces blood circulation. This can increase the risk of heart disease over time. Dr. Vora advises taking short breaks, standing up, and stretching every hour to keep blood flowing and reduce stress on the heart.

Eyes are also vulnerable. Rubbing them frequently can damage the cornea, causing long-term vision issues. Protecting your eyes from strain, reducing screen time, and avoiding excessive rubbing can help preserve eye health.

Digestive health is affected by both overeating and eating too fast. Dr. Vora emphasizes mindful eating, chewing food properly, and maintaining moderate portion sizes to prevent stomach discomfort and support digestion. Similarly, heavy late-night meals put extra load on the liver and interfere with metabolism. Avoiding late dinners or keeping them light can protect liver function.

Kidneys depend on proper hydration. Failing to drink enough water can increase the risk of kidney stones and impair their ability to flush out toxins. Dr. Vora recommends drinking adequate water throughout the day to maintain kidney health.

Brain health is impacted by constant multitasking. While modern life often demands juggling multiple tasks, doing so continuously can reduce focus and weaken memory over time. Practicing single-tasking and giving the brain breaks can help maintain cognitive health.

Lastly, ears are at risk due to prolonged exposure to loud music through headphones. Dr. Vora warns that listening to high volumes for hours can cause permanent hearing loss. Reducing volume and taking regular breaks can protect hearing.

Overall, Dr. Vora highlights that being aware of these small habits and making minor adjustments can significantly improve long-term organ health. Simple lifestyle changes, such as staying hydrated, eating mindfully, limiting screen time, and taking breaks during work, can reduce hidden strain on your body and improve overall wellbeing.
