Business owners often perform a special puja at their workplaces to seek prosperity and success for the year ahead. Homes are cleaned thoroughly, and new clothes are worn to mark the festival’s start. People also light diyas and place a Yam Deepam in their homes to ward off untimely death and negative influences, symbolizing protection and long life for family members.

Families perform the puja by placing idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera on a clean platform, offering flowers, sweets, and prayers. Chanting mantras and singing devotional songs or bhajans are part of the rituals. Many also make donations or help the needy, emphasizing the spirit of giving and community during the festival.

Dhanteras is a time for celebration, reflection, and preparation for the following days of Diwali, which include Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
