Students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have expressed serious privacy concerns after an alumnus was allegedly caught recording a video outside a hostel washroom on October 12. The incident occurred near hostel number 14, where students noticed suspicious activity and immediately alerted the authorities. Campus security intervened and handed the individual over to the Powai police.

According to several students, the alumnus had been a frequent visitor to the campus, and many are now questioning the purpose of his repeated presence. Students also claimed that when police checked his phone, hundreds of similar videos were discovered. However, neither the IIT-B administration nor the Powai police have confirmed these details publicly.

One student, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “He was seen on campus often, and now we understand why. This has made all of us more cautious about our privacy and personal space.” Another student added, “The incident was a direct violation of our privacy and security. We want clear information from the institute about the actions being taken.”

The alumnus reportedly used his official alumni ID card to access the campus. According to students, a student caught him recording near the washroom and raised the alarm. “We apprehended him immediately and handed him to the institute’s security officer, assuming appropriate action would follow,” the student explained.

In response to the incident, an IIT-B spokesperson stated, “After students brought this to our attention, our security officers handed over the person to the Powai police. The matter is currently under investigation with the Powai police.” The spokesperson also clarified that initial information suggested the individual was not a current student, although sources confirmed that he was, in fact, an alumnus of IIT Bombay.

Datta Nalawade, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Zone 10, confirmed that the alumnus was handed over to the Powai police. However, since no formal complaint was filed by the institute or anyone else, no first information report (FIR) was registered, and no arrest has been made. The police are investigating the matter further.

The incident has caused unease among the student community, raising concerns over security and privacy measures on campus. Many students have called for stricter checks for alumni and visitors to prevent similar breaches in the future. There is also a growing demand for transparency from the institute regarding what steps will be taken to ensure student safety.
