International Cricket Council Chair Jay Shah on Thursday congratulated India for being recommended to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, calling it a “momentous occasion for Indian sports.” The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport confirmed on Wednesday that Ahmedabad has been proposed as the host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, marking a historic milestone in India’s sporting journey.
In a post on X, Jay Shah wrote, “Many congratulations to India on Commonwealth Association’s approval of India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad! This is a momentous occasion for Indian sports and a testament to the country’s growing global presence.” The recommendation comes after a thorough evaluation by the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee, which assessed candidate cities across multiple criteria including technical delivery, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance, and alignment with the values of Commonwealth Sport.
Both Ahmedabad and Abuja, Nigeria, submitted proposals guided by Commonwealth Sport’s ‘Games Reset’ principles, which encourage innovation, collaboration, and sustainability in planning. Ahmedabad’s proposal highlighted the city’s capacity to host a large-scale sporting event while reflecting the ambitions and spirit of the Commonwealth Sport Movement. The recommendation marks a significant moment for the movement, as the 2030 Games will celebrate the centenary of the inaugural Commonwealth Games, held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
India, as the most populous nation within the Commonwealth, has a distinguished history in the Games, securing fourth place in the medal tally at Birmingham 2022. Ahmedabad’s bid emphasizes India’s ability to host an event of global scale, showcasing its world-class sporting facilities, organizational capabilities, and commitment to Commonwealth values. The city’s infrastructure and planning aim to offer an exceptional experience for athletes, officials, and spectators, reinforcing India’s growing role on the international sporting stage.
P T Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, described the recommendation as an extraordinary honor for the nation. She said hosting the Centenary Games in Ahmedabad would not only demonstrate India’s expertise in organizing world-class sporting events but also support the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. According to Usha, the Games would inspire young athletes, strengthen international partnerships, and foster a sense of shared purpose across Commonwealth nations.
The announcement has generated widespread enthusiasm across India’s sporting community, highlighting the country’s readiness to take on global sporting events of this magnitude. Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad is expected to have a lasting impact on Indian sports, encouraging grassroots development, enhancing infrastructure, and providing a platform for emerging talent to shine.
The 2030 Games in Ahmedabad will also celebrate India’s rich sporting legacy while presenting opportunities to innovate in areas such as sustainability, technology, and athlete welfare.
