Veteran Actor Pankaj Dheer, Iconic ‘Karna’ from Mahabharat, Passes Away After Battle with Cancer

Veteran television and film actor Pankaj Dheer, best remembered for his powerful portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra’s timeless TV epic Mahabharat, passed away on October 15 at the age of 68. According to sources close to the family, the actor had been battling cancer for a long time. Despite undergoing major surgery and showing signs of recovery, the disease reportedly relapsed a few months ago, leaving him critically unwell in recent weeks.
The Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) officially confirmed his demise in a heartfelt statement:
“With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA's former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025. The cremation will be held today at 4:30 pm, next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.”
Dheer’s long-time friend and CINTAA colleague Amit Behl also confirmed the sad news to India Today, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of one of Indian television’s most revered faces.

Pankaj Dheer’s legacy extends far beyond Mahabharat. His portrayal of Karna, the noble yet tragic warrior, earned him immense love and admiration from audiences across India and abroad. He also revealed that two temples—one in Karnal and another in Bastar—feature statues of him as Karna, where daily prayers are conducted. “There’s an eight-foot-tall statue of me, and people come there to worship. It’s overwhelming to see how deeply they’ve accepted me as Karna,” Dheer shared.
