Two Dead, Five Injured in Farrukhabad Blast Linked to Septic Tank Gas Leak
Lucknow | October 5, 2025
A powerful explosion in a two-storey building in Farrukhabad’s Kadri Gate area killed two people and injured five others on Saturday. Police believe the blast was caused by a buildup of methane gas inside a septic tank located under the building’s entrance steps.
According to officials, the building had a coaching centre on the ground floor and a library on the first floor. The explosion caused major structural damage, bringing down parts of the building and leaving the surrounding area covered in debris and dust. Witnesses described a loud blast followed by a cloud of smoke that sent people running for safety.
Police said the explosion was so strong that it brought down an adjacent tin shed and a supporting pillar. Several motorbikes parked nearby were destroyed, and furniture inside the premises was damaged beyond repair. One of the victims, believed to be about 26 years old, was likely inside the library when the incident took place. Authorities have not released the names of the deceased yet, as families are being informed.
Soon after the explosion, rescue teams from the local police and fire department rushed to the spot. Officers worked with residents to pull victims from the rubble. All injured people were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead. The remaining five are reported to be in critical condition and are undergoing treatment.
Station House Officer Rakesh Kumar said that during the initial investigation, police discovered an electrical switchboard located close to the septic tank. They suspect that a spark from the switchboard might have triggered the explosion after methane gas accumulated inside the tank. “We are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting technical evidence to confirm what exactly led to the blast,” he said.
The Farrukhabad Superintendent of Police, Arti Singh, said that investigators found no outlet or ventilation for the septic tank, which could have caused the gas to build up. She added that the police are conducting a detailed probe to ensure no other causes are overlooked. Forensic experts have been called to the site to gather samples and examine the extent of the damage.
Local residents said they heard a loud noise that shook nearby buildings. Many rushed out of their homes, fearing an earthquake or cylinder blast. People living in the area helped rescue teams clear debris until official help arrived.
By late evening, authorities had cordoned off the entire area to prevent further accidents. Police have advised nearby building owners to inspect their septic systems and electrical setups to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Investigators said their primary focus is on determining how the gas accumulated and what caused it to ignite. A detailed report will be prepared after forensic analysis and witness statements are completed. The incident has left the local community in shock, with residents mourning the loss of lives and calling for stricter safety checks in residential and commercial buildings.
