Heavy Rains Batter Maharashtra: Red and Orange Alerts Issued in Several Districts Till September 30

Mumbai | September 28, 2025

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded fresh red and orange alerts for several districts of Maharashtra as heavy rainfall continues across the state. Mumbai and Pune are under an orange alert today, while red alerts have been declared for Raigad, Thane, and parts of Palghar. The downpour is likely to persist till September 30, raising concerns of flooding, landslides, and disruptions in urban and rural regions.

According to the IMD’s latest forecast, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are expected at isolated locations in Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Widespread rainfall, including heavy to very heavy showers, has been predicted for these regions over the next two days.

The State Emergency Operation Centre has already issued precautionary instructions to district administrations across Maharashtra. Officials have warned that Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg may witness urban flooding due to continuous heavy showers. Low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable, and residents are urged to remain cautious.

Authorities have also highlighted the possibility of small and large landslides in the state’s ghat sections, along with flash floods in riverine regions. All district administrations have been directed to closely monitor river flows and implement preventive measures on a real-time basis.

The forecast indicates that while a mix of yellow, orange, and red alerts will be in effect today, September 28, conditions may intensify tomorrow. On September 29, red alerts are in place for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Nashik, suggesting extremely heavy rainfall in these districts. IMD, however, has hinted that rainfall activity may gradually reduce from the beginning of October.

In response to the alerts, the Maharashtra government has instructed all districts to keep control rooms operational round-the-clock. Water-lifting pumps have been deployed in urban areas prone to inundation, while teams have been stationed to ensure quick responses in emergencies. The government has also emphasized the importance of monitoring old and dilapidated buildings, warning that excessive rain could aggravate structural risks.

Repair units equipped with chainsaws and feeder protection systems are being kept on standby to address disruptions to electricity and road networks. At the same time, authorities are reviewing water storage and discharge levels in medium-sized dams across Konkan and upper valley areas to prevent overflow-related disasters.

Officials have also stressed the need to spread advance warnings quickly through SMS, social media platforms, and local media channels to ensure residents receive timely updates. Citizens have been advised to avoid flood-prone or dangerous areas, refrain from standing under trees during thunderstorms, and take precautions to secure essential items in case of emergencies.

The state government further urged residents not to cross overflowing bridges or canals and to make use of local shelter centres if needed. People have also been cautioned against circulating or believing rumours that may cause panic.

With rainfall expected to continue for the next two days, disaster management teams remain on high alert, ensuring measures are in place to protect life and property across Maharashtra
