Centre Announces High-Level Panel on Demographic Changes
New Delhi, May 26, 2026
Raising concerns over illegal infiltration and its impact on national security, the Central government has decided to set up a high-level committee to study demographic changes in sensitive regions of the country. The move signals a stronger policy focus on border management, internal security, and long-term population patterns in areas facing infiltration-related challenges.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the committee will examine “unnatural demographic changes” and identify factors contributing to such shifts. The panel will assess their social and security impact while recommending measures to strengthen monitoring and administrative response. Retired Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naik will head the committee, with senior former bureaucrats and experts included as members.
The government stated that illegal immigration remains a major challenge and reiterated its “zero tolerance” approach toward infiltration. Alongside the committee, the Centre is also working on advanced “smart border” systems along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders to improve surveillance and prevent unauthorised entry into the country.
The announcement comes amid wider discussions on border security and demographic stability in several regions. While opposition parties questioned the political implications of the move, the government maintained that the initiative is necessary to protect national interests, strengthen sovereignty, and ensure better coordination in tackling infiltration-related concerns.
