A legal dispute involving wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s participation in selection trials has come to an end, with the Supreme Court declaring the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) petition infructuous. The development marks the conclusion of a case that drew attention to athlete eligibility rules and the role of courts in sporting matters.

The controversy stemmed from a Delhi High Court order that allowed Vinesh Phogat to compete in the selection trials despite objections raised by the WFI. The federation subsequently moved the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court’s decision and seeking relief against the order permitting her participation.

However, since Phogat had already been allowed to take part in the trials, the Supreme Court observed that the federation’s plea had lost its relevance. The apex court therefore treated the matter as infructuous, effectively bringing the legal proceedings related to the challenge to a close.

With the case now settled, the focus shifts away from the courtroom and back to competitive wrestling. The episode has also reignited discussions on selection policies, athlete rights, and the balance between sports administration and judicial intervention in sporting affairs.
