Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project to Protect Wildlife, Improve Connectivity and Boost Tourism

Assam | January 18, 2026

The foundation stone of the Kaziranga elevated corridor project will be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, marking a major step towards safer wildlife movement in Kaziranga National Park and better road connectivity in Assam. Officials said the project aims to protect the park’s wildlife, especially during the monsoon season, and also to support eco-tourism in the region.

The project, worth ₹6,957 crore, includes four-laning of the Kaliabor-Numaligarh section of NH-37 (New NH-715) and construction of an approximately 34.45 km elevated corridor. It will also have bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat, helping reduce traffic pressure and accidents on the busy highway that passes through the park area.

Designed as per the directions of the Supreme Court and the Wildlife Institute of India, the project aims to ensure safe movement of animals from Kaziranga to the Karbi Anglong Hills, especially during floods. The elevated corridor will allow animals to cross safely beneath the highway, reducing human-animal conflicts and road accidents. The project will be executed by NHIDCL under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and is expected to be completed in 36 months.

Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for hosting the largest population of one-horned rhinoceros in the world. It also shelters significant numbers of tigers, elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer, making it one of India’s most important wildlife habitats. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called the elevated corridor a landmark step that will protect wildlife while strengthening connectivity in Assam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Kaziranga elevated corridor project in Kaliabor, Assam. The project is aimed at making travel safer and protecting wildlife in Kaziranga National Park. It is a major step to reduce accidents on National Highway-37 and support the region’s eco-tourism.

The project, costing around ₹6,957 crore, includes widening the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of NH-37 into four lanes and building a 34.45 km elevated corridor. It also includes bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat. The elevated corridor will allow animals to cross safely, especially during the flood season.

The plan has been made following the Supreme Court’s directions and the Wildlife Institute of India’s recommendations. Officials said it will help animals move freely between Kaziranga and the Karbi Anglong Hills. The work will be done by NHIDCL and is expected to finish in 36 months.

Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its one-horned rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, and many other species. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the project, calling it a landmark step for wildlife protection and better connectivity in the state.
