Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple infrastructure projects worth over ₹830 crore in Singur, a place deeply linked with West Bengal’s political history. Addressing a public rally, the Prime Minister said that projects supported by the Centre would help accelerate the overall development of the state and bring new opportunities for people across districts.

Singur holds symbolic importance as it was here that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee began her major political movement nearly 20 years ago. In 2006, she had led protests against the Left Front government over land acquisition for the Tata Motors Nano project, a movement that later played a key role in her rise to power. Speaking at the same location, PM Modi took a sharp dig at the Trinamool Congress government, accusing it of blocking the benefits of central welfare schemes from reaching the people.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for a “double-engine government” in West Bengal for faster progress. He said every district in the state has unique strengths, such as handloom, jute and traditional products like the Dhaniakhali saree. Further the  local industries could be promoted nationwide, providing livelihoods to families who have worked in these sectors for generations.

During the visit, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for an extended port gate system at Balagarh, including an Inland Water Transport terminal and a road overbridge. He also launched an electric catamaran service in Kolkata, inaugurated a new railway line between Jayrambati and Maynapur, and flagged off three Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Kolkata with Anand Vihar, Banaras and Tambaram. Earlier, in a post on X, the Prime Minister said his government remains committed to adding momentum to West Bengal’s growth journey through focused development works.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for infrastructure projects worth more than ₹830 crore in Singur, West Bengal. Addressing a public gathering, he said that Central government projects would play a key role in speeding up the state’s development and improving connectivity, transport and local livelihoods.

Singur carries strong political significance, as it was here that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee began her major political movement in 2006 by opposing land acquisition for the Tata Nano project. Speaking from the same ground, PM Modi criticised the Trinamool Congress government, alleging that it often blocks Central schemes and prevents their benefits from reaching common people in the state.

The Prime Minister said West Bengal needs a “double-engine government” for faster growth. He highlighted the potential of local products like jute, handloom and the famous Dhaniakhali saree, adding that schemes such as “One District, One Product” can help these traditional industries grow and create more employment.

During the event, PM Modi launched an electric catamaran in Kolkata, laid the foundation for an extended port gate system at Balagarh, and inaugurated a new railway line between Jayrambati and Maynapur. He also flagged off three Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Kolkata with major cities, reaffirming the Centre’s focus on boosting Bengal’s infrastructure and economy.
