Padikkal’s 167 Powers India to 462 in Galle

New Delhi,  August 17, 2026

India’s first innings in the opening Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium ended at 462 runs, with Devdutt Padikkal’s outstanding century emerging as the highlight of the Indian batting effort. Despite several interruptions caused by rain during the first two days, India managed to post a strong total before being bowled out early on the third day.

Padikkal produced an impressive 167 off 230 balls, hitting 15 fours and one six. He built a 162-run partnership with KL Rahul for the second wicket and later added 71 runs with Rishabh Pant. Rahul also made a valuable contribution, scoring 82 from 175 deliveries with 10 fours and a six. Dhruv Jurel further strengthened India’s total with a half-century, making 51 from 68 balls.

Pant scored 39 off 62 balls, while Yashasvi Jaiswal made 32 from 37 deliveries, including five fours, but both failed to turn their promising starts into substantial scores. Captain Shubman Gill contributed 16 runs, Ravindra Jadeja made 13, Manav Suthar scored 24 from 43 balls, and Mohammed Siraj added 11. Kuldeep Yadav remained unbeaten on 13. India’s innings was wrapped up in the very first over of the third day when Asitha Fernando dismissed Prasidh Krishna for 2.

For Sri Lanka, spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was the leading wicket-taker, claiming four wickets for 109 runs. Keshara Nuwantha, making his Test debut, picked up three wickets, while Asitha Fernando took two. Rain had already disrupted the contest significantly, washing out the entire first session on the second day and causing a lengthy interruption on the opening day. With India’s innings now over, Sri Lanka face the task of responding to a substantial first-innings total and making their opportunity with the bat count.
