Bangladesh: CCTV Captures Suspicious Activity as Hindu Man Dies in Narsingdi Blaze

Bangladesh | January 25,2026

A 25-year-old Hindu man, identified as Chanchal Bhowmik, was burned to death on Friday night in Narsingdi, Bangladesh. According to police, Bhowmik was asleep inside a garage when the fire broke out. The incident has raised concerns, especially after CCTV footage revealed suspicious activity near the spot where the fire started.

Narsingdi Police Superintendent Abdullah Al Faruque told news agency that CCTV footage from the area shows a person moving around the scene. “We have collected footage from the CCTV cameras and observed that there is a scene showing a person moving around. We are investigating whether the fire was caused by some external factor or by an electrical fault,” he said. The police are currently examining all possibilities, including a deliberate attack or an accidental electrical issue.

The fire reportedly started inside the shop where Bhowmik was sleeping. Firefighters broke open the shutter in an attempt to rescue him, but it was too late. His body was found severely burned inside the garage. “We are still investigating everything, and so far, no one has been arrested,” SP Faruque added. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fire yet, and the investigation is ongoing.

This incident comes amid a rising trend of attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh. In recent months, several cases of violence targeting minority communities have been reported. One such case involved a man named Dipu Chandra Das who was lynched and set on fire after false rumours of blasphemy. In Narsingdi city itself, a 40-year-old Hindu shop owner was killed in a separate attack. Another case in Naogaon saw a Hindu man, Mithun Sarkar, die after jumping into water to escape a mob accusing him of theft.

These events have raised serious concerns about the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh, especially ahead of national elections scheduled for February 12, 2026. The country is facing a tense security environment with growing communal tensions and a ban on the Awami League. Official records show that minority communities faced numerous incidents last year. Police data shared by chief advisor Mohammad Yunus revealed that around 645 such incidents were reported across the country in 2025. “The findings show that 71 incidents were identified as having communal elements, while 574 incidents were assessed as non-communal in nature,” he said in a statement posted on X.
