Suvendu Adhikari Unveils Bengal Cabinet Portfolios
Kolkata, May 11, 2026
West Bengal’s newly formed BJP government has started laying out its administrative structure with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assigning portfolios to the first batch of ministers. The move marks an important phase in the transition of power as the new leadership begins distributing responsibilities across departments. While several senior leaders received major portfolios, Adhikari chose to retain some of the most significant ministries under his direct control for the time being.
The first round of portfolio allocation saw senior BJP figures being entrusted with crucial departments linked to governance and public administration. Ministries connected to rural development, women and child welfare, municipal affairs, youth services, tribal welfare and food supply were handed over to different cabinet members. The distribution reflects the party’s attempt to create a balanced cabinet while giving experienced leaders important administrative roles.
Despite the allocations, some of the state’s most influential portfolios, including Home Affairs and Finance, continue to remain with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The decision indicates that the chief minister intends to maintain direct oversight of critical administrative and financial matters during the early phase of the government. Political observers see the move as a strategy to ensure tighter coordination as the new administration settles into office.
With the cabinet structure gradually taking shape, attention is now shifting toward how the BJP-led government plans to implement its policies in West Bengal. The portfolio distribution is being viewed as the first major step in defining the administration’s priorities and governance style. As the government moves forward, political focus is expected to remain on its handling of key state issues and the effectiveness of its newly formed leadership team.
