Australia to Evacuate Citizens From Virus-Hit Cruise Ship

Canberra, May 11, 2026

Australia has announced plans to evacuate its citizens from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak, as concerns grow over the health situation onboard. The decision comes amid increasing international efforts to safely bring back passengers and prevent any possible spread of the virus.

Authorities confirmed that Australian nationals stranded on the vessel near Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands will be flown home through a government-supported operation. Officials also stated that the passengers will undergo mandatory quarantine after arrival as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.

Reports said several people connected to the cruise ship have fallen ill, while multiple deaths linked to the outbreak have also been recorded. Countries including Spain, France, and the United States have started coordinating similar evacuation and monitoring measures for their citizens associated with the vessel.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of rapid health response systems and strict precautionary protocols during international outbreaks. While officials continue to monitor the situation closely, governments are focusing on containment, passenger safety, and preventing further health risks.
