UP Govt Makes Arrangements for Night Shelters, Blankets Amid Cold Wave

New Delhi, December 28:  As a severe cold wave and dense fog continue to grip Uttar Pradesh, the state government has stepped in with large-scale relief measures to protect people from harsh winter conditions. With temperatures dropping sharply across districts, the focus is on ensuring that no one, especially the poor and homeless, is left exposed to the cold.

According to official information released on December 27, the government has activated night shelters, blanket distribution drives and bonfires across all districts. Clear instructions have been issued to district administrations, municipal bodies and concerned departments to carry out relief work with care and sensitivity. Officials have been told to ensure that no needy person suffers during the cold spell.

So far, 1,247 night shelters have been set up across Uttar Pradesh, providing safe spaces for people during freezing nights. Nearly 9,949 people have already taken shelter in these facilities. The government has directed local authorities to maintain proper cleanliness, lighting, hot water facilities and security in these shelters so that people can stay comfortably and safely.

Blanket distribution has been given top priority as part of the winter relief plan. Over the past three years, the state has purchased an average of more than 10.65 lakh blankets, spending around ₹44.38 crore. Under the current system, ₹17.55 crore has been released to all districts, and purchase orders have been issued by all 75 districts. So far, 3,78,884 blankets have been supplied, and 1,40,364 blankets have already been distributed to people in need. Distribution of the remaining blankets is ongoing.

To provide additional warmth, the government has also arranged for bonfires at public places. A total of ₹1.75 crore has been allocated to districts for this purpose. The lighting of bonfires is being monitored daily through a relief portal to ensure timely action and accountability.

Technology is also being used to prevent fog-related accidents. The Relief Commissioner’s office has sent over 33.27 crore alert SMS messages through the Sachet app and web portal to officials and the general public. Departments like NHAI, PWD and UPIDA are regularly issuing fog alerts to district magistrates and police officials.

With these measures in place, the state aims to reduce hardship and keep people safe as winter conditions continue.
