A tragic accident in Sydney’s Hornsby suburb has left a family shattered after 33-year-old Samanvitha Dhareshwar, an Indian-origin woman who was eight months pregnant, died when she was struck during a chain collision on Friday evening, November 14.

According to reports, the incident occurred outside a carpark on George Street when a Kia Carnival slowed down to allow Dhareshwar and her family to cross the footpath. At the same moment, a BMW sedan driven by 19-year-old Aaron Papazoglu crashed into the Kia from behind. The impact pushed the Kia forward, causing it to hit Dhareshwar, who was only weeks away from welcoming her second child. Paramedics treated her at the scene before she was rushed to Westmead Hospital. Despite efforts by medical staff, both she and her unborn baby passed away.

Police arrested Papazoglu early Saturday morning. He now faces several serious charges, including dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, and causing the loss of a foetus. Authorities confirmed that he holds a provisional driving licence. The Kia driver, a 48-year-old man, was not injured, and neither was the BMW driver.

Assistant Commissioner David Driver described the scene as extremely distressing, especially for the first responders who arrived shortly after 8 pm following emergency calls. The police statement detailed that paramedics attempted to stabilise Dhareshwar at the location before transporting her to the hospital in critical condition.

Dhareshwar, originally from Karnataka, was working as an IT professional in Sydney. She and her husband, Vineet, also a tech professional, had recently purchased land in Grantham Farm and submitted plans to build a two-storey family home. What was meant to be a hopeful new chapter has now turned into an unimaginable loss for the family and community.

Local media reports indicate that the accused driver will apply for bail, and the case is expected to draw significant attention due to the seriousness of the charges and the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths.
