Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav’s appearance before the Supreme Court over seven cheque dishonour cases ended on a lighter note on Wednesday, when Chief Justice of India Surya Kant suggested that the actor make a good new movie to entertain audiences and rebuild his public image. The remark came during proceedings on Yadav’s challenge to his conviction and three-month sentence, as the Court also considered arrangements for payment of the amount involved in the cases.
Yadav, who was personally present before a bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana, told the Court that he had suffered significant losses from his film project Ata Pata Lapata. His counsel argued that the project was a joint venture but that the financial liability had ultimately been placed on Yadav. The Court had earlier given him a “last opportunity” to deposit ₹2 crore out of ₹5 crore with the Registry. On Wednesday, Yadav furnished demand drafts worth ₹1.15 crore, which the Court directed to be deposited.
The Court also allowed Yadav additional time to arrange the remaining ₹85 lakh through the sale of a property. It was informed that a prospective buyer was available but did not want to complete the registration during the Shradh period. When Yadav’s counsel sought to argue the case on merits, Justice Bagchi said the Court could dismiss the matter if arguments were made on merit and warned that the three-month sentence could be increased to two years. “We are only giving accommodation in order to give equitable relief to the complainant,” Justice Bagchi remarked.
CJI Surya Kant directed that the prospective buyer deposit ₹85 lakh by October 13. After that, the Court will decide a schedule for payment of the remaining amount to the complainant. The complainant’s counsel said that three months’ time would be acceptable if ₹2 crore was paid at this stage. The directions came as the Court continued to address the payment issue connected with the cheque dishonour cases.
After the hearing, the CJI turned to a lighter exchange with Yadav and asked, “Koi nayi movie aa rahi hai? Koi achi si movie banake logo ko dobara entertain karo. Aapki image dobara ban jaegi. Humare yahan kuch advocate bhi ache actor hain” [Is any new movie coming? Make a good movie and entertain the public again. Your image will be restored. Here, we have some advocates who are good actors]. The comment brought a light-hearted close to the proceedings.
