A massive slope collapse in Nepal’s Manang district sent earth, rocks and mud into the Marsyangdi River, creating a dangerous obstruction near Chame and putting downstream communities on alert. The incident unfolded amid intense rainfall that has destabilised mountain slopes and swollen rivers across the region.

The landslide struck near Chame on Sunday evening, with a large volume of debris entering the Marsyangdi and restricting its natural flow. The blockage raised concerns that water accumulating behind the debris could cause a sudden surge if the obstruction shifted or gave way.

Authorities urged residents along the Marsyangdi corridor to remain highly vigilant and stay away from riverbanks. The warning came as the changing river flow created uncertainty for settlements further downstream, where a sudden release of water and debris could pose a serious threat.

The mountainside collapse came amid widespread weather-related disruption in Manang. Floodwaters have entered settlements, damaged homes and affected bridges and roads, while residents in vulnerable locations have been moved towards safer ground. Talgaon, a low-lying settlement along the Marsyangdi, was also hit by flooding.

The situation later showed signs of improvement as water began making its way through the debris and the Marsyangdi’s flow gradually recovered. Authorities, however, continued monitoring the river and unstable slopes. The episode highlights how quickly heavy rainfall in Nepal’s mountainous terrain can turn a landslide into a wider river and flood hazard.
