India Ranks 5th in Global Military Spending Surge
New Delhi, April 28, 2026
India has emerged as the world’s fifth-largest military spender, according to the latest report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), underlining a continued rise in defence investments amid shifting global security dynamics. The findings reflect how nations are increasingly prioritizing military strength in response to geopolitical tensions and regional challenges.
India’s military expenditure reached approximately $92.1 billion in 2025, recording a notable increase from the previous year. This growth places India behind the United States, China, Russia, and Germany in global rankings. The report also highlights that worldwide defence spending has been rising consistently, marking another year of overall increase driven by ongoing conflicts and strategic competition.
China continues to hold the second position globally with a defence budget of around $336 billion, significantly higher than India’s spending. In comparison, Pakistan ranks much lower at 31st, with military expenditure estimated at about $11.9 billion, even though it too has seen a rise in its defence budget.
Overall, the data points to a broader global pattern of expanding military budgets, with countries strengthening their defence capabilities in uncertain times. For India, this upward trend reflects a focus on modernization and preparedness, as it navigates both regional pressures and its role in an evolving global order.
