Rajya Sabha Bids Farewell to 59 Members; PM Modi Says ‘There Is Never a Full Stop in Politics’

New Delhi | 18 March 2026

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday bid farewell to 59 members from 20 states, including nine women, marking an emotional moment in the parliamentary calendar. The ceremony recognised the contributions of retiring members who have played a key role in shaping discussions and decisions in the House.

Addressing the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated the departing members and said their service to parliamentary democracy would always be remembered. He emphasised that in public life, experience never goes to waste, stating, “there is never a full stop,” as their knowledge and contributions continue to remain relevant for the nation.

The Prime Minister described the farewell as a recurring yet emotional event that takes place every two years. He noted that such moments reflect respect and gratitude towards colleagues who are moving ahead for new responsibilities. He added that the retiring members have made immense contributions to the functioning of the House over the years.

Mr Modi also mentioned Harivansh Narayan Singh, who is among those retiring, and acknowledged his long service. He said Harivansh consistently worked to maintain balance and earn the trust of all members while conducting the proceedings of the House.
