Gill, Iyer Return as India Name ODI Squad for New Zealand Series
New Delhi | January 3:
India have recalled Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to their One Day International squad for the upcoming three-match home series against New Zealand, beginning January 11. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also confirmed the return of Mohammed Siraj, while Hardik Pandya has been rested as part of a workload management plan ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Gill will take charge as India’s ODI captain, while Iyer, subject to fitness clearance, has been named vice-captain. Gill had missed the recent ODI series in South Africa after suffering a neck spasm during the Kolkata Test, though he returned during the T20I leg of the tour. Iyer is set to make his comeback after recovering from a spleen injury sustained on the Australia tour and has not played competitive cricket since October 2025.
Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who last played an ODI in Australia in October 2025, has earned his way back into the squad following consistent performances in Tests and domestic cricket, where he turned out for Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Gill, Iyer and Siraj replace Tilak Varma, Dhruv Jurel and Ruturaj Gaikwad from the squad that defeated South Africa 2-1. While Tilak and Jurel did not feature in that series, Gaikwad made a strong impression with a century at No. 4 in Raipur.
India’s batting core includes Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal, with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant serving as wicketkeeper-batters. The all-rounders’ group features Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy, while Kuldeep Yadav leads the spin department. The pace attack will consist of Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh.
The BCCI said Hardik Pandya has not yet been cleared to bowl a full 10-over spell and is being carefully managed with the T20 World Cup starting February 7.
The ODI series begins in Vadodara on January 11, followed by matches in Rajkot (January 14) and Indore (January 18).
