Dense Fog Causes Deadly Multi-Vehicle Pile-Up in Amethi, Two Killed and 18 Injured

Amethi, Uttar Pradesh | December 23, 2025

Dense fog led to a massive multi-vehicle collision on a national highway in Amethi early Tuesday morning, claiming two lives and leaving 18 people injured, as the state continues to experience severe cold wave conditions. Senior police officials reported that the accident occurred around 2 a.m. near the Amethi–Sultanpur turn, close to an under-bridge in the Musafirkhana police station area. Visibility had dropped drastically due to thick fog, creating dangerous driving conditions.

According to Amethi Additional Superintendent of Police Gyanendra Kumar Singh, the chain of events began when a truck lost control after hitting the roadside railing. Following vehicles, unable to stop in time because of low visibility, collided with the truck, triggering a pile-up. At least seven vehicles were involved in the crash, including a Uttar Pradesh Roadways bus, three trucks, a car, and another heavy vehicle.

“Two people died on the spot, while 18 passengers were injured,” said Station House Officer Vivek Singh. Rescue teams immediately arrived at the scene and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, with several in serious condition. Authorities worked for several hours to clear the highway and restore traffic, while ongoing efforts were made to identify the deceased and the injured.

The Amethi accident was the most serious among several fog-related crashes reported across Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. In Varanasi, a speeding DCM vehicle collided with a trailer near Lohrapur, leaving the driver seriously injured. In Moradabad, two trucks hit the road divider on the Delhi–Lucknow National Highway near Katghar due to extremely poor visibility, temporarily disrupting traffic.

Police have repeatedly warned motorists to avoid late-night and early-morning travel during foggy conditions, especially on highways. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and remain extra cautious.

The meteorological department has forecast that fog, cold winds, and cloudy skies are likely to continue across the state through Christmas and New Year. On Christmas Day, temperatures are expected to hover between 6°C and 11°C, keeping roads slippery and visibility low.

The state relief commissioner held a meeting with officials from 25 districts, instructing them to remain alert. A video advisory has also been released, urging citizens to contact emergency numbers 108 and 112 immediately in case of accidents during foggy conditions. To reduce accident risks, speed limits on expressways and highways have been capped between 60 kmph and 80 kmph.

Authorities continue to stress vigilance and caution as Uttar Pradesh grapples with fog-related hazards, aiming to prevent further accidents and ensure public safety during extreme winter
