Rajya Sabha Disrupted as Opposition Demands Answers on India–US Trade Agreement

New Delhi | 3 February 2026

The Opposition staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, demanding a detailed discussion on the India–US trade deal and questioning why its announcement was made unilaterally by US President Donald Trump. The protest erupted amid heated exchanges in the House, with Opposition members raising slogans and seeking answers from the government on the developments related to the agreement.

Leader of the House Jagat Prakash Nadda strongly criticised the disruption, saying the government was already responding to concerns linked to the recent tweet by the US President on trade tariffs. Referring to the possible reduction in US tariffs on Indian goods from 25 per cent to 18 per cent, Nadda remarked, “I can clearly see the frustration of the Opposition, which always has the tendency to see evil in the good.” He assured the House that the government was ready to address all questions on the trade issue in detail.

After the walkout, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut accused the government of compromising national interest. “The entire Opposition walked out of the Rajya Sabha. National interest and the interests of farmers were compromised. I feel that this trade deal has been signed to safeguard Gautam Adani, and we will protest against this from the streets to Parliament,” he said.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan cautioned the Opposition for interrupting the proceedings, stating, “When the government is answering, you are shouting. This is not good.” He accused the Congress and the INDIA bloc of irresponsible behaviour, saying it showed “they have no interest in the growth and trade of our country.” According to him, the repeated disruptions reflected political frustration rather than genuine concern for national interest.

Nadda rejected allegations that the Centre was hiding information and said the government had always discussed major issues openly in Parliament. Calling the Opposition “issueless,” he accused it of deliberately stalling proceedings to mislead the public and undermine trust, adding that such actions go against the larger interests of the country.

Rajya Sabha Disrupted as Opposition Demands Answers on India–US Trade Agreement

The Opposition staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha after demanding a detailed discussion on the India–US trade deal. Members questioned why the agreement was announced by US President Donald Trump instead of being formally presented by the Indian government. The issue led to noisy scenes in the House, with slogans raised and repeated appeals from the Chair to maintain order.

Leader of the House Jagat Prakash Nadda criticised the Opposition for disrupting proceedings while the government was responding to concerns related to trade tariffs. Referring to possible tariff reductions on Indian goods, he said, “I can clearly see the frustration of the Opposition, which always has the tendency to see evil in the good.” Despite assurances that the government was ready to answer all questions, the Opposition chose to walk out.

After the walkout, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused the government of acting against national interest. He said, “The entire Opposition walked out of the Rajya Sabha. National interest and the interests of farmers were compromised. I feel that this trade deal has been signed to safeguard Gautam Adani, and we will protest against this from the streets to Parliament.” His remarks further intensified the political debate around the deal.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan expressed strong displeasure over the disruptions and warned the Opposition against such conduct. He said, “When the government is answering, you are shouting. This is not good.” Nadda reiterated that the Centre would make a detailed statement on the trade issue and accused the Opposition of creating unnecessary chaos and misleading the public instead of engaging in constructive discussion.
