From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, India’s Rail Network Enters a New Era: President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on January 28, 2026, highlighted India’s rapid progress in railway infrastructure while addressing the joint session of Parliament at the start of the Budget Session 2026–27. She said the country is moving swiftly towards modernisation, with nearly 80 percent of the railway network now electrified, marking a major step towards efficient and sustainable transport.

The President underlined the growing connectivity in the Northeast, noting that Aizawl has now been directly linked to New Delhi by rail. She recalled the historic moment when the Rajdhani Express reached Aizawl for the first time, saying the enthusiasm of local residents reflected national pride and unity, drawing appreciation from across the country.

Referring to landmark engineering achievements, President Murmu said India has set new benchmarks in infrastructure development. The construction of the world’s highest railway arch bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, along with major new bridges in other parts of the country, stands as a symbol of India’s growing technical strength and vision.

She also spoke about the expansion of semi-high-speed rail services, stating that more than 150 Vande Bharat trains are now operational from Jammu and Kashmir to Kerala. The introduction of next-generation Vande Bharat trains, she added, represents India’s commitment to faster, safer and more comfortable rail travel for citizens nationwide.
