Germany–India Ties Get a Strategic Push as Chancellor Friedrich Merz Concludes Two-Day India Visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to India, marking his first trip to Asia since assuming office. The visit underscored the growing strategic, economic and geopolitical alignment between India and Germany at a time of heightened global uncertainty.


Chancellor Merz arrived in Bengaluru on the second day of his visit and was received at Kempegowda International Airport by Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil along with senior officials. During his stop in the IT capital, Merz visited the India headquarters of German technology major Bosch in Adugodi and later toured the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) at the Indian Institute of Science, highlighting Germany’s interest in India’s innovation and research ecosystem.


A day earlier in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India and Germany had agreed to transform their economic partnership into a “limitless” collaboration, expanding cooperation beyond trade into strategic and future-ready sectors. Both leaders also interacted with Indian and German CEOs, emphasising the role of industry-led collaboration in strengthening global supply chains and technological cooperation.


Apart from economic ties, the two leaders held discussions on key global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the situation in Gaza and broader geopolitical developments. With bilateral trade touching an all-time high and increased German investments flowing into India, the visit added fresh momentum to the India–Germany partnership, positioning it as a key pillar of global economic and strategic stability.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz concluded his two-day official visit to India on Tuesday, marking his first journey to Asia since taking office. The visit highlighted the deepening strategic and economic ties between the two nations, with a strong focus on innovation, global cooperation and future-ready partnerships.


On the second day of his visit, Chancellor Merz arrived in Bengaluru, where he was received by Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil and senior officials. During his time in the city, he visited the India headquarters of German tech major Bosch and the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, showcasing Germany’s keen interest in India’s technology and research ecosystem.


Earlier in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India and Germany had agreed to elevate their economic engagement into a “limitless” partnership. Both leaders also met Indian and German CEOs, stressing that closer collaboration in trade, investment and advanced technologies is vital not only for the two countries but for global economic stability as well.


Beyond economics, the discussions also covered major global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the situation in Gaza. With bilateral trade at a record high and several German companies expanding their footprint in India, the visit added fresh momentum to the India–Germany relationship, signalling a stronger, more comprehensive partnership in the years ahead.
