New Delhi | January 6, 2026

A shocking incident came to light in East Delhi on Monday evening after a 25-year-old man allegedly killed his mother, sister, and minor brother at their home in the Laxmi Nagar area and later surrendered at a nearby police station. Police said the accused claimed severe financial distress drove him to commit the crime.

The accused has been identified as Yashbir Singh. According to police officials, he walked into the Laxmi Nagar police station around 5 pm and informed officers that he had killed three members of his family. After receiving the information, police teams rushed to the family’s residence in the Subhash Chowk area, where they found the bodies of the three victims inside the house.

The deceased were identified as Yashbir’s mother, Kavita, aged 46, his sister Meghna, aged 24, and his younger brother Mukul, aged 14. Police said all three were found inside the house, and initial findings suggested poisoning followed by physical harm. Forensic teams were called to the spot, and the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

According to preliminary investigation, Yashbir allegedly mixed poisonous dhatura seeds into sweets and fed them to his family members. Police said the accused claimed that after the victims lost consciousness, he killed them. Following the incident, he reportedly left the house and went straight to the police station to confess.

During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that his family had been under severe financial pressure for several months. He claimed that his father, a truck driver, had been living separately from the family for the past six months. Yashbir, who also worked as a driver, reportedly remained unemployed during this period, adding to the family’s financial problems.

Police officials said the accused also told them that he had taken a term life insurance policy worth approximately ₹1.5 crore. He further claimed that he had made multiple attempts to end his own life over the past two months, but was unsuccessful. Investigators are now verifying these claims and examining related documents.

The accused also alleged that his mother had confronted him a day before the incident, though police said this claim is being checked as part of the investigation. Officers noted that statements made by the accused are being carefully verified to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the deaths.

Police confirmed that Yashbir’s wife was not present at the house at the time of the incident. Her role, if any, is currently being examined. Officials said she is being questioned to understand the family’s situation and any events that may have preceded the crime.

An FIR is being registered in connection with the case, and multiple investigation teams have been formed. Police said they are collecting evidence from the crime scene, recording statements of neighbours and relatives, and waiting for the post-mortem reports to strengthen the case.

Senior police officials described the incident as deeply disturbing and said it highlights the need to address mental health and financial stress issues. They added that further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with neighbours expressing disbelief over the tragic deaths. As the investigation continues, police said they are focused on establishing motive, confirming the method used, and ensuring that all legal procedures are followed.
