Sonia Gandhi Hospitalised at Ganga Ram with Respiratory Discomfort, Doctors Say Condition Stable

New Delhi | January 6, 2026

Congress MP Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on Monday after she experienced respiratory discomfort. Hospital authorities confirmed that her condition is stable and that she is responding well to medical treatment. Doctors described the admission as a precautionary step to closely monitor her health.

According to an official statement issued by the hospital, Sonia Gandhi underwent a detailed medical examination soon after her arrival. The assessment revealed that her bronchial asthma had shown mild worsening. Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr Ajay Swaroop, said the condition was triggered by a combination of cold weather and high pollution levels currently prevailing in the national capital.

Dr Swaroop explained that although the symptoms were not severe, the medical team decided to admit her for observation and proper care, considering her medical history. “She was experiencing breathing discomfort, and medical evaluation showed a mild exacerbation of her bronchial asthma due to cold weather and pollution. As a precaution, she was admitted for further observation and treatment. At present, her condition is absolutely stable,” he said.

The hospital further informed that Sonia Gandhi is under the care of a team of specialists and is being treated with antibiotics along with other supportive medications. Doctors said she is responding positively to the treatment and there is no cause for immediate concern. Her vital parameters are being closely monitored, and she remains under observation to ensure a smooth recovery.

Sources at the hospital said the decision regarding her discharge will depend on her clinical progress over the next few days. The treating physicians will take a call based on how well she continues to respond to treatment and whether her respiratory symptoms fully subside.

Sonia Gandhi, a senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament, has had a long public career and has faced health issues in the past as well. News of her hospitalisation prompted concern among party leaders and supporters, many of whom expressed their wishes for her speedy recovery.

Doctors also pointed out that respiratory problems tend to increase during winter months in Delhi due to a sharp drop in temperature and rising pollution levels. Elderly individuals and those with existing respiratory conditions such as asthma are particularly vulnerable during this period. Medical experts often advise such patients to take extra precautions, including limiting exposure to outdoor pollution and following prescribed treatment regularly.

The hospital administration assured that Sonia Gandhi is receiving the best possible medical care. They reiterated that her condition remains stable and that there is no immediate threat to her health. Updates on her condition will be shared as and when required.

As of now, Sonia Gandhi continues to remain under observation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, with doctors maintaining a positive outlook on her recovery.
