A tragic road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district claimed four lives and left at least 25 people injured early Tuesday morning after a massive pile-up involving several vehicles led to a devastating fire. The accident occurred around 4:30 am near Milestone 127 in the Baldev area, when dense fog sharply reduced visibility on the highway.

According to district officials, at least seven buses and three cars collided in quick succession as drivers struggled to see ahead in the heavy fog. The impact of the collisions triggered a fire that quickly spread to multiple vehicles, leaving several of them completely charred. Three of the four people who died were travelling in buses, while the fourth victim was in a car.

A video showing the aftermath of the accident later surfaced on social media, highlighting the scale of the tragedy. The visuals, shared by news agency ANI, showed burnt vehicles scattered across the highway as police personnel, fire brigade teams, and rescue workers carried out operations at the site. Thick smoke and debris could be seen even after the fire was brought under control.

Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh confirmed the deaths and said emergency services were rushed to the spot as soon as the accident was reported. A dozen fire tenders and 14 ambulances were deployed to rescue trapped passengers, extinguish the fire, and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar said the accident was caused by low visibility due to dense fog. “The incident took place at 4:30 am at Milestone 127 of the Yamuna Expressway. Seven buses and three cars piled up because drivers could not see properly due to fog. After the collision, a fire broke out, in which four people lost their lives and 25 were injured,” he told reporters.

The SSP added that all injured persons were admitted to hospitals and are currently receiving treatment. “None of the injured is reported to be in a serious condition. Traffic was diverted during the rescue operation, and the fire has now been completely doused,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident and expressed grief over the loss of lives. He directed officials in the Mathura district to immediately reach the accident site and ensure proper medical care for the injured, especially those who suffered burn injuries.

The Chief Minister also announced financial compensation for the victims’ families. An ex-gratia amount of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the family of each person who died in the accident. Officials said further assistance will be extended if needed.

Traffic on the Yamuna Expressway was temporarily disrupted following the accident, as rescue and clearance operations continued for several hours. Vehicles were diverted to alternative routes to prevent further congestion and ensure the safety of commuters.

The incident once again highlights the dangers of driving in poor visibility conditions, especially during winter months when dense fog is common in northern India. Authorities have urged drivers to follow speed limits, maintain safe distances, and use fog lights while travelling during early morning hours.

As investigations continue, officials are assessing the exact sequence of events that led to the pile-up. Meanwhile, families of the victims are mourning their loss, and the charred remains of vehicles stand as a grim reminder of how quickly a routine journey can turn tragic.
