L Murugan Quits Union Ministry and Rajya Sabha to Strengthen BJP in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, October 13, 2026

Union Minister of State L. Murugan has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers and the Rajya Sabha, choosing to focus on strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, Murugan requested immediate relief from his parliamentary position, stating that he wants to dedicate himself full-time to party organisation ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Announcing his decision on X, Murugan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country and Tamil Nadu under the Prime Minister’s leadership. He said, “It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve Bharat Mata and Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji.”

Highlighting his journey from a family of daily wage labourers to the Union Council of Ministers, he further said, “From the son of daily wage labourers to serving in the Union Council of Ministers under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has been the greatest privilege of my life.”

Murugan said he now wants to “return to the grassroots” and devote his full time to building the BJP’s organisation in Tamil Nadu. His decision comes ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, with the party’s state-level organisation emerging as his stated priority.

A former president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit, Murugan was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. His parliamentary term was due to end in 2030, but he requested immediate relief from the post in his resignation letter.

Murugan’s decision marks a transition from his ministerial and parliamentary responsibilities to full-time party work in Tamil Nadu. He has indicated that strengthening the BJP at the grassroots level will be central to his efforts as the party prepares for the next general election.
