India Ends Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Campaign With 85 Medals

New Delhi, October 04, 2026

India concluded its 2026 Asian Games campaign in Aichi-Nagoya with 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze — finishing fourth in the overall standings. While the tally was below India’s record 106 medals at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, the campaign featured several landmark performances, particularly in team sports, archery, boxing, wrestling and athletics. China topped the standings with 341 medals, followed by Japan with 269 and South Korea with 150

India’s biggest highlight was its clean sweep of gold medals in men’s and women’s cricket, kabaddi and hockey. The cricket teams retained their titles after defeating Sri Lanka and Pakistan, while India also won both kabaddi finals against Iran. In hockey, the women defeated China 1-0 to end a 44-year wait for an Asian Games medal and claim their first gold since 1982, while the men retained their title with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia. It was the first time both Indian hockey teams won gold at the same Asian Games, with both earning LA 2028 Olympic qualification.

Archery contributed nine medals, including five gold, with 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod becoming the first Indian to win an individual women’s recurve Asian Games gold. Boxing returned three gold and three bronze medals, with Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal winning their respective finals. Wrestling also delivered six medals, including golds for Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal, marking India’s best Asian Games wrestling performance since 1962.

Athletics was India’s biggest medal-producing discipline with 24 medals, including one gold, nine silver and 14 bronze. The women’s 4x400m relay team won the gold, while Vithya Ramraj also broke P.T. Usha’s long-standing national record in the 400m hurdles. Shooting added 15 medals, with Neeru Dhanda emerging as a standout after winning two golds and a silver. India also recorded historic achievements in golf, squash, sailing, weightlifting, wushu, mixed martial arts and soft tennis, including Pranavi Sharath Urs becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games golf gold.

India’s badminton campaign was comparatively disappointing, with only a men’s team bronze, while Manush Shah and Diya Chitale secured a historic mixed doubles bronze in table tennis. Despite finishing below the Hangzhou medal record, the Aichi-Nagoya campaign showcased India’s growing strength across both established and emerging sports. The combination of team-sport dominance, individual breakthroughs, national records and first-time medals leaves India with a campaign defined not only by its 85-medal haul but also by a new generation of historic performances.
