Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday welcomed India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, praising their achievements in Glasgow. India’s fourth-place finish with 39 medals reflected a strong campaign despite the country competing with a smaller contingent and in a reduced sporting programme. The athletes’ success, the Prime Minister said, could encourage more young Indians to take up sports.

“Delighted to host our outstanding medal winners from the Commonwealth Games 2026 at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Heard about their experiences from the Games. Each one of them has made our nation proud through their exceptional performances. Their success will motivate many youngsters,” PM Modi posted on X. He also shared a video of the meeting with the caption, “Always #Cheer4Bharat”. During the interaction, boxer and gold medallist Sakshi Chaudhary described PM Modi as “very humble” and said the athletes were proud and happy to meet him. PM Modi responded, “Jo khelega, woh khilega” (The one who plays, will blossom), and urged people to “Always cheer for Bharat.”

India’s Glasgow campaign produced 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals. The country sent 122 athletes, compared with 210 at Birmingham in 2022, while several sports that had contributed to India’s previous medal haul were absent from the Glasgow programme. Boxing emerged as one of the strongest disciplines, delivering seven gold and three silver medals. India’s seven boxing golds also marked its best-ever Commonwealth Games performance by women boxers. Judo produced another historic result, with four medals, including golds for Khelo India athletes Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh, who became the first Indian woman and man respectively to win Commonwealth Games judo gold.

Athletics added 10 medals, including five silver and five bronze. Gulveer Singh created history by becoming the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games, taking silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m. The Glasgow Games concluded with Scotland handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India. The country will host the 2030 edition in Ahmedabad, which will become the second Indian city to stage the Games after New Delhi hosted the event in 2010. India’s performance in Glasgow and its upcoming hosting responsibility underline the country’s growing presence on the Commonwealth sporting stage.
