Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Shows Impact on Sex Ratio, Girls’ Education: Centre

New Delhi, July 31, 2026

The Centre has highlighted the role of the **Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)** scheme in improving the Child Sex Ratio and advancing the empowerment of girls and women by promoting behavioural and social change across the country. The government said the initiative has increasingly developed into a nationwide movement focused on changing perceptions towards the girl child.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Women and Child Development **Savitri Thakur** said the scheme primarily focuses on changing societal attitudes towards the girl child by informing, influencing, motivating, engaging and empowering stakeholders at multiple levels. During the 15th Finance Commission period, BBBP was expanded under the **SAMBAL vertical of Mission Shakti** to cover all districts, with greater emphasis on interventions that produce tangible grassroots-level outcomes.

The latest **Health Management Information System (HMIS)** data showed that India’s Sex Ratio at Birth rose from **918 in 2014-15 to 929 in 2025-26 (provisional)**. In Delhi, it increased from **901 to 915**. Girls’ education also recorded gains, with the national Gross Enrolment Ratio at the secondary level rising from **75.51% to 83.4%**, while Delhi’s figure increased from **99.13% to 108.3%** over the same period.

The Centre said BBBP now brings together government agencies, media organisations, civil society groups and the public to promote the value of the girl child. Since the programme is primarily focused on awareness and long-term behavioural transformation, its direct beneficiaries cannot be measured through conventional figures. The government said its broader aim remains to create lasting change in how girls are perceived, valued and supported in society.
