Growing concerns over digital security and consumer protection have prompted the Centre to take action against unauthorised Battery Management System (BMS) mobile applications. After reports suggested that certain apps could remotely control e-rickshaw batteries without authorisation, the government directed app stores on July 3, 2026, to remove such applications as part of its efforts to strengthen cybersecurity and safeguard users.

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada informed the Lok Sabha that the government had taken cognisance of reports regarding the misuse of certain BMS applications and acted to ensure their removal from app stores. He also said that the government has established a comprehensive and coordinated national cybersecurity framework to strengthen cyber resilience and protect citizens against emerging digital threats.

As part of this framework, the National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC), functioning under the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), coordinates cybersecurity efforts across government agencies, while CERT-In serves as the national agency for responding to cybersecurity incidents under the Information Technology Act, 2000. The National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) continuously monitors cyberspace for cyber threats, and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) works to secure the country's critical information infrastructure.

The government also noted that consumer interests in the digital economy are protected under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Alongside legal safeguards, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is promoting cyber awareness through the Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) project and initiatives such as Stay Safe Online, Information Security Awareness, and the Cyber Swachhta Kendra, reinforcing its commitment to a safer and more secure digital ecosystem.
