Fresh weather warnings have put parts of Jammu and Kashmir on high alert as authorities prepare for the impact of intense rainfall over the coming days. With forecasts indicating the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy showers, officials have stepped up precautionary measures to reduce the risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas while urging residents to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, including Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian, where rainfall between 50 mm and 100 mm is expected on Tuesday, followed by lighter showers on Wednesday. The Pir Panjal range and Chenab Valley are likely to receive the heaviest rainfall, while parts of south Kashmir may witness short but intense spells of rain. In response, the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department has released a flood advisory for areas falling within the Jhelum river basin.

Authorities have warned that continuous rainfall could rapidly increase water levels in rivers, streams, nallahs and mountain channels, particularly in hilly and high-altitude regions. Residents have been advised to avoid riverbanks, flood-prone locations and unnecessary travel, while tourists and transporters have been urged to closely monitor official weather updates. Although the Jhelum River and its major tributaries remained below danger levels on Monday evening, officials expect water levels to rise if the rainfall continues.

Rainfall was recorded across both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions, with Sopore receiving 55.4 mm, Poonch recording 66 mm and Srinagar registering 45.6 mm during the past 24 hours. The showers brought relief from the recent hot weather, though humidity remained high in several areas. The Meteorological Department has also advised farmers to suspend irrigation and other agricultural activities for the next three to four days due to the possibility of heavy rain and waterlogging. As the wet spell continues, authorities are encouraging people to remain cautious and prioritise safety until conditions improve.
