Vinesh Phogat’s Asian Games Trial Battle Ends Amid Eligibility Debate

New Delhi, May 30, 2026

The controversy surrounding Vinesh Phogat’s participation in the Asian Games wrestling trials highlighted the ongoing tension between athlete rights and federation regulations. The case drew significant attention as questions emerged over eligibility rules, comeback opportunities, and the balance between administrative policies and sporting aspirations.

After being deemed ineligible under existing Wrestling Federation of India regulations, Vinesh challenged the decision, arguing that the rules created obstacles for athletes attempting a return to competition following a maternity break. The matter reached the courts, where discussions focused on whether exceptional sporting careers and personal circumstances should be taken into account while applying eligibility criteria.

The legal proceedings eventually allowed Vinesh to enter the trials, despite concerns raised by the federation regarding compliance with certain requirements. Further uncertainty surrounded the weight category in which she would compete, but she was later cleared to participate in the 53kg division, paving the way for her return to the mat.

However, her bid to secure a place at the Asian Games came to an end after a semifinal loss in the trials. While the outcome closed her immediate path to the continental event, the episode sparked wider conversations about athlete welfare, selection policies, and the challenges faced by sportspersons making competitive comebacks.
