Indian Journalists Win Pulitzer for Cybercrime Investigation

New Delhi, May 5, 2026

The 2026 Pulitzer Prize has brought global attention to investigative journalism focused on emerging digital threats, particularly cybercrime and online surveillance. The recognition highlights how storytelling through both visuals and reporting is becoming crucial in exposing complex technology-driven crimes in the modern era.

Indian journalists Anand RK and Suparna Sharma, along with Natalie Obiko Pearson of Bloomberg, were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in the Illustrated Reporting and Commentary category for their work titled “trAPPed.” The project presents a “riveting account” of a neurologist in India who was held under a “digital arrest” through her phone, using a combination of “visuals and words” to highlight the “growing global challenges of surveillance and digital scams.”

The investigation sheds light on how cyber fraud operates, particularly cases where victims are manipulated and trapped through digital means, often leading to serious financial and emotional consequences. The use of visual storytelling helps explain the mechanisms of such scams in a clear and impactful way.

This recognition marks an important milestone for Indian journalism on the global stage. It also underscores the increasing importance of investigative reporting in a digital age where cyber threats continue to evolve and impact lives worldwide.
