Bahraich’s ‘Hidden Gem’ Chittaura Lake Set to Become Nature-Eco Tourism Icon

Lucknow/Bahraich, April 26, 2026:

Uttar Pradesh is expanding its eco-tourism footprint with a fresh push in Bahraich, where the scenic Chittaura Lake near the Maharaja Suheldev Memorial is set to be developed as a major tourism destination blending nature, heritage and public recreation.

The state government has approved ₹4.10 crore for the integrated project and released ₹50 lakh as the first instalment, paving the way for work on the ground. Officials said the project aims to transform the lakefront into a visitor-friendly eco-tourism destination while preserving the area’s natural surroundings and historical character.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the initiative would add new momentum to tourism activity in the region. “Developing Chittaura Lake near the sacred land associated with Maharaja Suheldev will be a true tribute to our heritage. The site combines natural beauty with historic pride, and this project will allow visitors to experience both,” he said.

He added that under the leadership of PM Modi and guidance of CM Yogi, lesser-known destinations with strong cultural value are being brought into the tourism mainstream. Bahraich recorded over 34 lakh tourist visits in 2025, reflecting growing visitor interest in the district.

A large share of the project cost will go towards eco-friendly infrastructure and visitor amenities. A cafeteria block has been planned at an estimated ₹158.83 lakh, while ₹56.41 lakh has been earmarked for a viewing deck and boat jetty to create a stronger lakefront experience.

Other proposed facilities include a ticket counter block, toilets, borewell and submersible pump systems, septic infrastructure and water supply systems. Internal roads, interlocking pathways, drainage, rainwater harvesting and electrification works are also part of the plan.

To improve safety and aesthetics, CCTV systems, bio-fencing, horticulture works, seating zones, embankment strengthening and dry stone pitching have been included. Officials said the idea is to create a clean, family-friendly and sustainable tourism space where visitors can enjoy nature responsibly.

Chittaura Lake carries both historical and religious significance. Local tradition links the site to the famous 11th-century battle in which Maharaja Suheldev’s forces defeated invader Salar Masud. The lake is also associated with sage Ashtavakra and is believed to have once been known as the winding Tedhi river in ancient times.

Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat said the project could become a model for eco-tourism in the state. “Bahraich already has national recognition through Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. Karikot village in the district was honoured at the Indian Subcontinent Responsible Tourism Awards 2025 for peace and inclusivity. The region’s Tharu culture, community-led rural homestays and the Vistadome rail journey from Bichia to Mailani together make this belt one of Uttar Pradesh’s most promising eco-tourism zones,” he said.

He added that the Chittaura Lake project would complement these attractions by offering a nature-based heritage experience for families, students and travellers.

With lakefront development, heritage storytelling and eco-friendly infrastructure moving together, Chittaura Lake is now being positioned as one of eastern Uttar Pradesh’s most promising new eco-tourism destinations.
