Why Mindless Scrolling Feels Relaxing but Leaves You Mentally Drained

New Delhi | 26 March 2026

In today’s digital age, mindless scrolling on social media has quietly replaced traditional forms of relaxation such as reading, walking, or meaningful conversations. While it may feel like an easy way to unwind, experts suggest that this habit often leaves individuals more tired than refreshed. What appears to be a break for the mind is, in reality, a continuous cycle of stimulation that prevents true mental rest.

According to therapist and relationship coach Hema Mishra from the emotional wellness platform Coto, the temporary sense of calm from scrolling is driven by psychological triggers. Every new post, like, or notification releases small bursts of dopamine, creating a sense of pleasure. This system of “variable rewards” keeps users engaged, similar to addictive patterns seen in gaming or gambling. However, at the same time, the brain is constantly processing a stream of information, leading to cognitive overload rather than relaxation.

Experts also point out that excessive scrolling can quietly drain emotional and physical energy. Exposure to negative or overwhelming content can trigger stress responses in the body, releasing hormones like cortisol and keeping the mind in a subtle state of alertness. Additionally, long periods of screen time can cause eye strain, poor posture, and physical fatigue, especially when scrolling late at night.

Another hidden impact is the effect of social comparison. Viewing carefully curated glimpses of others’ lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and fear of missing out, further exhausting emotional well-being. While social media can be enjoyable, mindful and limited usage is key to maintaining mental balance. Experts advise being conscious of screen time habits to ensure that relaxation truly restores energy rather than depleting it.
