New Delhi | 11 March 2026
A Thai-flagged cargo vessel travelling towards Gujarat was attacked in the strategic waters of the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday after it was struck by an unidentified projectile, causing a fire on board. The vessel, named Mayuree Naree, was sailing close to the northern coast of Oman when the incident occurred, according to maritime security sources and ship tracking data.
Reports from the Royal Thai Navy and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations confirmed that the cargo ship was hit by an unidentified object on March 11. Following the impact, a fire broke out on the vessel, though it was later brought under control. Authorities verified the identity of the ship through its International Maritime Organisation number and visual confirmation of the ship’s structure.
Soon after the incident, the Omani Navy launched a rescue operation in the area. Out of the 23 crew members on board, 20 were safely evacuated from the vessel. However, three crew members remained on board after the rescue mission. Officials have not yet shared further details about their condition or the extent of the damage caused to the ship.
Maritime tracking systems showed that the ship’s last recorded location placed it around 11 nautical miles from Oman’s northern coastline at the time of the attack. Authorities are currently investigating the incident to identify the type of weapon used and determine the circumstances behind the strike. So far, no country or group has claimed responsibility, although the incident has drawn attention due to ongoing tensions in the region surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
