From Doctor to Civil Servant: Anuj Agnihotri Tops UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025
Rajasthan | 6 March 2026
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced the results of the Civil Services Examination on March 6, 2026, with Anuj Agnihotri securing the All India Rank 1. Originally from Rajasthan, the 26-year-old candidate’s journey to the top reflects determination, consistent effort, and a strong commitment to public service. His preparation journey included several mock interviews during which he demonstrated confidence in discussing governance issues, policy debates, and ethical challenges, even when he did not have every answer.
Anuj completed his MBBS from AIIMS Jodhpur in 2023 and began preparing for the civil services examination during the final stage of his medical studies. His path to success was gradual and marked by perseverance. In his first attempt in 2023, he cleared the examination with a rank of around 400. Following that result, he was allotted the Union Territory cadre and was posted as a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Delhi. However, he was not fully satisfied with the outcome and decided to continue preparing in order to improve his rank.
In the following year, Anuj appeared for the 2024 examination and successfully cleared the Mains stage, reaching the interview round. Although he did not make it to the final selection list that year, he remained focused on his goal. With continued preparation and determination, he appeared again and ultimately secured the top position in the 2025 examination, achieving the All India Rank 1.
Anuj comes from a modest family background. His father, K.B. Agnihotri, works at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station in Rawatbhata, while his mother, Manju Agnihotri, is a homemaker. He completed his schooling at Atomic Energy Central School in Rawatbhata, where he scored 94 percent in Class 12. Speaking about his journey, Anuj highlighted the importance of patience and persistence. “If I hadn’t succeeded this time, I would have continued preparing for the next attempt. It’s a process and there are ups and downs. Now that I have succeeded, everything feels much easier,” he said.
