Calls for Resignation Grow as Atishi Faces Backlash Over Alleged Remarks on Sikh Gurus
Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi has come under sharp criticism over alleged objectionable remarks made during the Delhi Assembly session, which Sikh organisations claim hurt religious sentiments. The controversy has triggered protests and political backlash, with demands for her apology and resignation growing louder.
The National Akali Dal (NAD) strongly condemned Atishi’s remarks, calling them an insult to Sikh gurus, particularly Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. NAD president Paramjit Singh Pamma demanded that Atishi step down from her post and apologise to the Sikh community, warning of intensified protests if the demands are ignored.
Pamma also urged the Delhi Assembly Speaker to cancel Atishi’s membership, stating that such comments reflect poorly on the Aam Aadmi Party’s mindset. He said the Sikh community would not tolerate any disrespect towards its religious leaders, recalling the historic sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji for the protection of faith.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders and Sikh groups staged demonstrations in Delhi, raising slogans against Atishi and accusing her of making derogatory statements in the Assembly. The silence of AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal on the issue has also drawn criticism, with opposition leaders saying it could cost the party politically.
