India Unveils a 77-Foot Bronze Lord Ram Statue as PM Modi Marks a Historic Cultural Moment

Nov 28, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled a monumental 77-foot bronze statue of Lord Ram at the ancient Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt in South Goa, marking what organisers describe as the tallest statue of Lord Ram anywhere in the world. The unveiling took place during major celebrations honouring 550 years of the mutt’s spiritual legacy, drawing thousands of devotees and top dignitaries. The event became a landmark moment for Goa as it highlighted both cultural pride and centuries-old tradition.

The ceremony began when the Prime Minister arrived at the mutt around 3:45 pm, landing at a specially built helipad constructed inside the premises for the occasion. After offering prayers inside the temple complex, he addressed a large gathering, expressing his happiness at unveiling the statue just days after raising a sacred flag at Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir. He said the moment held deep personal and national significance, linking historic traditions with contemporary cultural expression.

The event brought together key figures including Goa Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union minister Shripad Naik, and the entire state cabinet. Authorities described it as one of the largest gatherings hosted by the mutt in recent years, with preparations underway for weeks to manage visitors and refurbish the complex. Organisers expect between 7,000 and 10,000 people to visit the mutt every day during the ongoing celebrations.

The statue itself is a major highlight. Created by renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, known globally for designing the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the 77-foot bronze figure is expected to become a new spiritual and cultural attraction in Goa. Local leaders, including Goa Public Works Department minister Digambar Kamat, said the installation brings immense pride to the state and adds a significant symbol to the mutt’s long-standing legacy. They noted that the structure is now considered the tallest representation of Lord Ram in the world, giving the site international visibility.

The unveiling coincides with a series of programmes scheduled from November 27 to December 7 to commemorate 550 years of the mutt’s rich tradition. Established 370 years ago at Partagal in Canacona, the mutt has been a respected centre of learning, spiritual guidance, and religious activity for generations. For the celebrations, the entire complex has been upgraded and modernised while preserving its sacred character. According to officials, the goal was to blend tradition with practicality so the space could welcome the large number of devotees expected throughout the festival period.

The day’s event answered the key questions of who was involved, what was unveiled, where the ceremony took place, when it occurred, and why it holds national importance. With Prime Minister Modi leading the ceremony, the unveiling of the tallest Lord Ram statue stands as a milestone moment for Goa and the wider cultural landscape of India. Many who attended described the occasion as deeply emotional, marking a union of heritage, devotion, and national pride. As celebrations continue over the next several days, the statue is expected to draw thousands more who wish to witness this historic addition to India’s spiritual landmarks.
