UP on High Alert as Nepal’s ‘GenZ’ Protests Escalate Into Widespread Violence
Lucknow | September 10, 2025 —
The Uttar Pradesh government has placed all seven districts along the Indo-Nepal border on high alert amid escalating violence in the Himalayan nation, where anti-government protests led by young demonstrators have shaken Kathmandu and several other cities. The move follows the resignation of Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli after days of unrest.
The clashes, described as some of the most intense in recent years, saw government buildings in Kathmandu and other cities torched, including Parliament, the President’s office at Shital Niwas, and residences of senior leaders. Local media reported at least 19 deaths and more than 500 injuries in confrontations with police.
Vigil Along the Border
Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Rajiv Krishna directed round-the-clock surveillance and intensified patrolling across the seven border districts — Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj. Additional forces have been deployed to prevent the infiltration of anti-social elements.
A special control room has been established at Police Headquarters in Lucknow to assist Indians stranded in Nepal. Officials said three helpline numbers will remain operational 24×7 — 0522-2390257, 0522-2724010, and WhatsApp number 9454401674.
“The UP Police is fully committed to maintaining law and order in the state and providing assistance to Indian nationals caught in Nepal’s crisis,” said Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash.
Authorities clarified that while the Indo-Nepal border remains open, vigilance has been significantly stepped up. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which secures the frontier, has increased patrols. Commissioner of Devipatan division, Shashi Lal Bhushan Sushil, has also instructed district magistrates to coordinate closely with police and SSB units.
Nepal’s Deepening Crisis
The protests, dominated by young demonstrators and labeled the “GenZ uprising,” were initially sparked by the government’s ban on 26 major social media platforms — including WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube — citing revenue and cybersecurity concerns. Although the ban was later lifted, the crackdown ignited widespread anger, combining frustration over corruption, governance failures, and lack of accountability.
By Tuesday, unrest had spread to border towns like Nepalgunj, where schools and businesses shut down for a second consecutive day. Protesters blocked roads with burning tyres and surrounded government offices.
President Ram Chandra Paudel issued an appeal for calm, urging demonstrators to choose dialogue over destruction. “In a democracy, the demands raised by citizens can be addressed through negotiation,” he said in a statement carried by local media.
Airports and Curfews
Curfews were imposed in Kathmandu, Dang, and several other regions, while the Nepal Army took charge of security operations from 10 pm Tuesday. Military officials called on youth to exercise restraint and safeguard both public and private property.
The unrest also hit international travel. Airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet cancelled flights to Kathmandu after protesters attempted to breach security at Tribhuvan International Airport.
With the crisis intensifying, India’s border state of Uttar Pradesh remains on edge, balancing vigilance at the frontier with measures to support citizens affected by Nepal’s turmoil.
UP on High Alert as Nepal’s GenZ Protests Turn Violent
The Uttar Pradesh government has placed all seven Indo-Nepal border districts on high alert after violent protests rocked Nepal, forcing PM KP Sharma Oli to resign. In Kathmandu and other cities, angry demonstrators torched Parliament, the President’s office, and homes of top leaders. At least 19 people have died and more than 500 were injured in clashes. UP Police have increased patrolling, set up a control room, and issued 24×7 helplines for Indians stranded in Nepal. Curfews are in place across Nepal, while flights to Kathmandu stand cancelled as the “GenZ uprising” shows no sign of easing.
