Delhi Protest Intensifies as Opposition Demands Election Chief’s Resignation
New Delhi, 06 October 2026
Political tensions intensified in New Delhi on Tuesday as opposition parties took to the streets over the controversial revision of voter lists. With a heavy police presence across central Delhi, protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged irregularities in the voter registration process.
Opposition lawmakers marched toward the Election Commission headquarters, raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and calling for Kumar to step down. The protesters accused the Election Commission of manipulating voter registrations to benefit Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission and the government have denied any wrongdoing. The BJP also came out in support of the poll panel, calling the opposition’s allegations “completely misleading.”
The planned march triggered a major security response in the heart of the capital. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers, while barricades were placed along the protesters’ route. Several roads were shut and travel advisories were issued for the surrounding areas. The march was stopped before reaching the Election Commission headquarters, and several protesters were detained by authorities.
Tuesday’s action comes amid a wider wave of demonstrations that has continued almost daily since last week. Student groups, opposition parties and India’s “Cockroach” youth movement have participated in the protests, bringing a significant number of young people into the demonstrations.
The opposition has increasingly turned to Gen Z-style messaging as it seeks to connect with younger voters following the growing participation of youth in the “Cockroach” movement. The strategy has become part of its wider effort to expand its support base and maintain pressure on the government over the voter-list controversy.
