Indian Railways Introduces Major Crowd Management Measures at Stations to Enhance Passenger Safety

New Delhi | 28 March 2026

Indian Railways has announced a comprehensive set of measures to manage heavy passenger rush and improve safety at railway stations across the country. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha that the initiative focuses on reducing congestion, streamlining passenger movement, and strengthening surveillance systems at high-footfall stations.

As part of the plan, permanent passenger holding areas will be developed at 76 identified stations. These designated spaces will help regulate crowd flow by accommodating passengers during peak hours before they enter platforms. The holding areas will include essential facilities such as seating, drinking water, toilets, ticketing counters, and real-time information displays, along with proper security arrangements.

The holding area at New Delhi Railway Station has already been made operational, equipped with modern amenities including automatic ticket vending machines, CCTV cameras, luggage scanners, metal detectors, and improved public announcement systems. Similar upgrades are being planned at other stations. Additionally, access control systems will be introduced, allowing only passengers with confirmed tickets to enter platforms directly, while others will be managed in designated zones.

To further enhance efficiency, Indian Railways is deploying AI-enabled surveillance systems, wider foot-over-bridges, and digital communication tools for staff. Dedicated control rooms will be set up at major stations to ensure coordinated operations, while Station Directors will be given greater authority to manage crowd flow and make quick decisions. These measures aim to create a safer, more organised travel experience for passengers across the network.
