Yogi Adityanath Takes Strict Stand Over Controversial Question in UP Police SI Recruitment Exam

Lucknow | 15 March 2026

Yogi Adityanath has taken a strong stand after a controversy erupted over a question in the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board Sub-Inspector recruitment examination. The issue surfaced during the second day of the exam, drawing criticism from candidates and several public representatives. The state government has now indicated that strict action could be taken against those responsible for the mistake.

The controversy began after a question in the exam asked candidates to select a single word for the phrase "अवसर के अनुसार बदल जाने वाला". Among the four options given in the question paper was the word "पंडित", which triggered strong objections from several groups and candidates. Many argued that the inclusion of the term in such a context was inappropriate and disrespectful.

Soon after the issue came to light, senior leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Sharma began efforts to address the situation and calm the growing backlash. The Chief Minister later intervened and issued strict instructions to all recruitment boards to ensure that question papers do not contain remarks or references that may hurt the dignity, faith, or sentiments of any individual, community, caste, or religion.

The Chief Minister also directed that paper setters must be clearly instructed to maintain sensitivity while preparing examination papers. He warned that if any paper setter repeatedly makes such mistakes, they will be treated as a habitual offender and immediately barred from future work.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the recruitment board, S B Shirodkar, clarified that the question paper was not prepared internally by the board. According to him, highly confidential external agencies are responsible for setting the exam papers, and even board officials cannot access them before the examination. He confirmed that an inquiry has been ordered to identify the institution responsible for the wording error.

Following the controversy, the recruitment board is also considering forming a new review committee to audit questions before exams in the future. The incident has raised serious concerns about accountability and the process of preparing question papers for major government recruitment examinations.
