Parliament Discusses Budget Grants and Energy Supply Concerns Amid West Asia Conflict

New Delhi | 13 March 2026

Proceedings in the Lok Sabha will continue with further discussion and voting on the Supplementary Demands for Grants for the current financial year. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to reply to the debate in the House. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha will continue its discussion on the functioning and programmes of the Ministry of Rural Development.

Earlier, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed the Lok Sabha and spoke about the government’s response to disruptions in global energy supply caused by the ongoing tensions in West Asia. He assured the House that India’s crude oil situation remains stable and said the domestic availability of LPG cylinders continues to be secure. He also informed members that the usual time between booking and delivery of domestic LPG cylinders has not changed.

The minister emphasised that the government’s main focus is to ensure uninterrupted supply of cooking gas to households across the country. According to him, the priority is to provide consistent LPG access to millions of families, particularly those from poor and underprivileged sections who depend on the fuel for their daily cooking needs.

During the discussion, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi expressed concern about the situation, saying that public anxiety over LPG availability is increasing. He noted that many restaurants and street vendors are facing difficulties due to the fear of supply shortages. Highlighting the broader issue, he said that "the foundation of every nation is its energy security".
