Assi Struggles at Box Office as Day 2 Collections Remain Low

Maharashtra | 21 Feb 2026

Assi, starring Taapsee Pannu, has shown a slow performance at the Indian box office. The film, directed by Anubhav Sinha, earned just over ₹1.5 crore on its second day, taking its total collection to around ₹2.6 crore so far. Despite its strong subject, the film has not managed to pull large audiences into theatres.

The film opened with ₹1 crore on day one and added about ₹1.6 crore nett on Saturday, according to early estimates. Theatre occupancy remained low at just over 10 percent. In comparison, Taapsee’s previous release Khel Khel Mein performed better on its second day, earning over ₹2 crore, highlighting the relatively weak start for Assi.

Reviewing the film, sources reported, "Overall, even when it stumbles in the latter half, Assi's intent remains sincere, and its gaze stays firmly with the survivor rather than the spectacle around her." The review added that the film is uncomfortable by design and aims to provoke thought, even if it does not always deliver its message in the most subtle way.

Speaking earlier, Sinha explained that the film is not based on one real incident but draws from many similar stories. He called such films “real mainstream cinema,” saying, "In my view, this cinema (referring to films such as Assi) is the future of Hindi cinema." The story follows a woman who survives sexual assault and focuses on her fight for justice, with Taapsee playing her lawyer. The cast also includes Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Manoj Pahwa, Seema Pahwa, and Kumud Mishra, while the film is produced by T-Series and Benaras Mediaworks.
